Luxembourg Autumn Trails – belgium map
In October 2010 we took the train from Ghent in Belgium to Luxembourg City arriving around 11am. Even though the journey is not long, you have to purchase your train ticket from the International Counter in Ghent.
As we weren’t taking the local bus to Larochette in northern Luxembourg till 3pm, we took our suitcases to the left luggage office at the other end of the main platform (3 Euro per case). The restaurant attached to the Luxembourg City train station served a nice buffet lunch for about 6 Euro. After lunch we walked around the upper walls of the old city which had lovely views.
We collected our luggage and caught the bus outside train station depot to Larochette. The bus took about an hour through lovely countryside. Arriving at Larochette and following the directions from our host we arrived at her home 5 minutes later.
Larochette is a very small village in northern Luxembourg. It has a ruined castle which was unfortunately closed for restoration. There are many beautiful walks in the area which is surrounded by forest. We spent 3 days in Larochette and went out on walks every day.
Being autumn, all the leaves on the trees in the forest were turning golden. Coming from northern tropical Australia we have evergreens and even in southern Australia where the leaves do turn you still have a mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees. So to see nothing but valleys of golden autumn trees was so beautiful.
The air was crisp and cold but no rain. Our host gave us a map with all the walking trails around Larochette. The walking trails are very well marked and the map accurately details the distance, duration and degree of difficulty which is very helpful. We are not trekkers but do enjoy getting out amongst nature.
Our Hospitality Club host and her dogs made us feel very welcome and we really enjoyed our stay wit her. We have promised to return in summer as she advised there were some lovely walks through the forest to nearby lakes where you could swim.
We caught the morning bus back to Luxembourg City where we caught the train to Metz in France to stay with some friends.
